Reading measurement photos carefully

A number is only useful when the measurement method is visible. Before comparing it with your own item, confirm where the tape starts, where it ends and whether the item is laid flat.

Four details that change the result

• Units: confirm centimetres or inches rather than inferring from scale.
• Start point: check whether the tape begins at zero and meets the intended edge.
• Garment position: folds, stretch and curved seams can change a flat reading.
• Camera angle: perspective can make the tape and edge appear misaligned.
